Unawatuna is really the holidaymaker’s paradise

Sunshine galore! Acclaimed to be one of the worthiest locations to enjoy a bright day outside for a sunbathing session as umbrella drinks are served to you, Unawatuna is really the holidaymaker’s paradise!

Complete with a few hours of water sports such as diving, snorkelling and surfing, this stretch of beach, albeit slightly narrower than its neighbouring beach resort destinations such as Galle or Hikkaduwa is the perfect escapade for a long weekend.

“Who knew that waking up to the sound of the breeze as it whistled into our hotel room via the balcony would feel so charming?”

  • Situated 140km from the capital city, Unawatuna is a great spot to visit, especially if you’re already in Galle – it’s only a short drive from here.
  • While beach activities are abundant (including the many shipwrecks that are accessible for experienced scuba divers), Una has its fair share of forested terrain, all thanks to its Jungle Beach which is a narrow stretch of coastline that’s famous for snorkelling opportunities.
  • Take the Unawatuna-Hinatigala main road to visit one of Sri Lanka’s age-old rock temples, the Yatagala Rajamaha Viharaya. Almost 2300 years old, it features a 9 metre long, golden tinged statue of Lord Buddha.

This coastal township is such that it can present a bit of both extremes; if you’re a nature or animal lover, the Habaraduwa Turtle Hatchery is just the ideal place for you to spend an afternoon admiring baby turtles as they’re attended to.

For the socialite in you, here’s some good news! Unawatuna is frequented by numerous well renowned DJs, be it local, expatriate and foreign who play the grooviest tunes to engage you in vibes unlike ever before.
